What Is FUT Hair Transplantation?
FUT is an older hair transplantation method and not many people prefer using it today, but it remains well known. The method is less common now because it often causes pain after the operation and requires medication to manage discomfort.
First, let’s discuss what FUT stands for and how it differs from the more popular FUE method.
How FUT Differs from FUE
FUT stands for Follicular Unit Transplantation, which literally means direct transplantation. Unlike FUE, which extracts individual follicles, FUT involves removing a strip of scalp tissue. This procedure takes more time and can cause aches for the patient.
When FUT is used, a strip of hair about 2–5 mm in length is shaved between the ears. An aesthetic “hair band” incision is made through the skin, requiring great care to preserve follicle tissues, hair density, elasticity, and graft integrity.
The FUT Procedure Step by Step
After shaving and making the hair band incision, local anesthesia is applied. The harvested strip is then dissected under a microscope to separate follicular units into single, double, or triple hairs.
Next, tiny channels are created at the recipient site—determined by the patient’s facial shape—and each graft is implanted one at a time. Finally, the head is bandaged for 24 hours before the dressing is removed.
Advantages and Disadvantages of FUT
One advantage of FUT is that the resulting linear scar is hidden by surrounding hair. However, stitches are required at both donor and recipient sites.
Recovery can be slower, and discomfort more pronounced, compared to FUE. Patients often need pain medication and a longer healing period, which is why many now opt for FUE instead.
Planning Your FUT Sessions
The FUT procedure can be divided into two sessions if necessary. Spacing sessions allows for denser coverage and improved natural appearance.
Each session begins with hairline design, followed by follicle implantation and bandaging. If complications arise, splitting into multiple sessions reduces patient stress and risk.
Pain, Recovery & Choosing the Right Method
Ultimately, FUT may cause pain during and after surgery, while FUE is virtually painless both during the procedure and recovery. Your choice between FUT and FUE will depend on your tolerance for discomfort, desired coverage, and healing time.
